Meet Morgan James

By Madison Stapels

Morgan James has had a fruitful singing career both on stage and online. With over 47,000 subscribers and 15 million views of her videos, she is just as successful on YouTube as she is at selling out her shows. Her videos with the ensemble Postmodern Jukebox are particularly well liked by her fans. A mix of neo-soul and pop, James transforms popular hits into something completely new.

Raised by parents in the acting industry, Morgan was inspired at a young age to be involved in the arts.  She credits her classical education at The Julliard School for becoming the disciplined vocalist she is today.  Seven years after graduating from Julliard, she made her Broadway debut in The Addams Family. Afterwards, she performed in leading and prominent roles in Wonderland, Godspell, and, the role she may be most known for, Teena Marie in Motown the Musical.

Morgan’s first album is a collection of her covers of Nina Simone songs, and the second is her first solo studio album entitled Hunter in which she recorded her own background vocals and harmonies. She divulged, “I just want to bring back the power of the singular legacy voice.”  James recently released a YouTube Sessions EP that compiles some of her favorite covers.  Copies of this EP will be available to purchase at Wharton Center during her performance.

Join Morgan James in the intimate Pasant Theatre on December 6 for a night of soulful entertainment. MSU students are offered a discount ticket price at $15. You don’t want to miss out!
