Welcome back to the MSU community! As usual, as August comes to a close, we are all left scratching our heads wondering where summer went and how it slipped by so quickly. Soon, MSU students will be pulling their backpacks back on as classes resume and fall begins to show its colors. Amidst the return of homework, treks to lecture halls, and the sinking temperatures, Wharton Center has your ticket (literally) to some of the best entertainment in town, as well as plenty of upcoming opportunities to learn more about us, including our awesome student ticket prices: $25 for most Broadway shows, and $15 for most Performing Arts!
If you haven’t had a chance to look at our full 2014-2015 season lineup, go check it out at our website by clicking here. Below is a snapshot of some of our upcoming events and video clips!
Our Broadway season opens with ONCE, a hauntingly beautiful love story featuring an incredibly well-known soundtrack. If you’ve heard the song “Falling Slowly”, then you’re already familiar with this touching production. Known for being a “pub musical” with a big indie focus, this musical is sure to delight any audience member. But be warned! MSU students can ONLY access the $25 student discount at Student Ticket Day on September 6th, from 1pm-4pm, so come visit us at the Ticket Office to make sure you get your tickets for a great price!
Next up for Broadway is a beloved classic telling the story of an optimistic little girl and her big adventure to discover the truth about love and family. It’s everyone’s favorite little red-head: Annie. So the next time you start feeling down about exams, assigned reading, or other school-time blues, just remember that “It’s a Hard Knock Life”, but “the sun will come out tomorrow”!
At the end of January we’re bringing in another classic show: Pippin! What makes this show so unique? The brand new production includes awe-inspiring acrobatic numbers and cirque-themed performances to entrance and astound audience members. It’s Pippin as you’ve never seen it before! A fantastical story about self-discovery, coupled with music that’s bound to be stuck in your head after the curtain falls, and you’ve got a top-notch Broadway show that never stops entertaining, even after decades on the stage!
By now, you’re probably really excited about this upcoming season, but wait–there’s more! Wharton Center also brings in world-class performing arts shows, including internationally-acclaimed orchestras, unique and exhilarating dance groups, as well as a variety of other exciting performances.
I’m sure you’ve heard of critically-acclaimed author David Sedaris, right? Well, he’s coming to Wharton Center! A celebrated humorist and witty author of best-sellers like Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, as well as many others, David Sedaris comes to Wharton Center for one night only! If you’re in the mood for brilliant humor and an insightful discussion, don’t miss this special opportunity!
If you like classical music or are new to it altogether, this event is for you: The “bad girl of the violin”, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg joins the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, directed by conducting superstar Pavel Kogan. One of the world’s greatest orchestras performing an all-Tchaikovsky program; definitely a performance you can brag about seeing!
Looking to see some world-class dance acts? Look no further than Dance Theatre of Harlem! This unique group combines classical ballet with contemporary moves for a look that is entirely their own. Visually stunning and physically precise, they are a model for ballet groups, and an amazing performance to see with your own eyes!
To give you an example of the musicians we bring, check out Arturo Sandoval, trumpet-player extraordinaire! Trained under Dizzy Gillespie, this vibrant performer encompasses jazz as well as Cuban and bebop music to create a sound that’s one of a kind. Known internationally for his talent, he’ll have you tapping your feet and snapping your fingers in no time. He’s even got a movie made about his life, starring Andy Garcia as Arturo Sandoval!
